Taking an hamster on an airplane is a great way to get some much needed exercise. There are several ways to take an hamster on an airplane, but the most basic is to place it in a small cage and let it travel with you.
Many airlines allow you to have a non-human rodent as a companion, typically for free. Theoretically, if you follow the rules and regulations for being kind and considerate, your companion will also be kind and considerate of you.
The problem comes when that companion starts feeling compelled to do things it was never trained to do. For example, say your hamster gets up every morning at dawn to make breakfast. By morning dawn, many people are hungry and ready to eat breakfast.
So, that little hamster wakes up at sunrise each day and goes inside its home with all the necessary tools.
Consider the temperature
When traveling in colder climates, an extra layer is a good idea. But what if you don’t have any extra clothing?
Traveling is stressful, so it is good to think about your extra clothes and safety. If you are not sure if the hotel or airport has enough layers, ask for some tips.
Many places will give you pamphlets with safety tips and information on how to avoid self-injury while in bed or at night. Some places even have signs that say these things!
If the person in charge of providing safety tips doesn’t seem like they care, maybe they aren’t going to be trusted. You can’t know what someone is really comfortable with and it can lead to mistakes.
Buy a carrying case
If you want your hamster to have a nice, safe and convenient place to live, you should buy a carrying case. These cases are usually made of vinyl or polyester and have a series of compartments for things such as supplies or necessities like food, supplies, and housing.
These cases are great for places where you would not want to put the hamster in its enclosure for various reasons (like in an airplane ride)! You can also use these cases as housing for your other animals.
Get her used to it
Most hamsters are accustomed to being hand-fed. This is typically done by placing a bowl or dish set up at the hamster’s level.
By having a food dish or a bowl, this practice can be started immediately. A good way to introduce food in the cage is to place some kind of treat dish inside of it. Once she learns that there is food in the box, you can remove the food!
Unfortunately, some hamsters are not accustomed to being fed on demand. The ones that are hungry may not get fed. The ones that aren’t hungry may starve to death due to not being able to find food.
This happens more than you think? You put your hamster in her cage, put her in her home, and take her out.. She gets used to everything, and you make sure she gets enough water and snacks!
It happens! Just be aware of it and pay attention to when it happens.
Make sure you have all the necessary documents
A hamster can get expensive. A six- to eight-week-old hamster will cost about $30, making it the most expensive pet. If you do not want to purchase one but you have another pet, make sure it is healthy and safe with you.
You can take your hamster anywhere with a car cage, but make sure the car cage is large enough for your hamster to move around in. If your hamster likes warm weather, consider purchasing a thermal sleeping bag or blanket to cover it up.
The lining of the thermal sleeping bag should be thick enough for your hammy to escape into if he needed to get warm. And lastly, make sure that any toys or habitats you give him are safe for him. All animals require certain precautions when treating them for travel.
Ask the airport if they have a pet area
Some airports do have pet areas, and if they do, check to see if it is allowed to have a hamster in that area.
If the hamster is not allowed, there are several non–invasive ways to treat your hamster that does not involve leaving her in a container for hours or days without care.
Some places will let you take your hamster on vacation, or on an airline as a carry–on item. Other airlines will not allow pets with regular sized cages, so ask the airport whether or not you can put yours in a larger cage.
Even with these exceptions, it is very important that your pet gets consistent care and attention. Even when traveling, keep your pet up–to‑date on its diet and hydration needs.
Prepare your hamster for travel
A good rule to follow is to give your hamster a home for at least one week. This can be done the day you get your hamster or you can buy a store bought hamster home.
If you plan on taking your hamster on an airplane, make sure it is in a cage that is large enough to accommodate its size. If it is not, make sure it has a comfortable place to rest and where it can get enough water.
After traveling, take the hamster out and give it a drink. Cages often hold onto water and smell long after people have gone.
Keep them calm and comfortable before takeoff
Before your trip, you should make sure your hamster is comfortable. He or she should be happy and comfortable in his or her cage at home.
During the trip, the hamster must be cooled to avoid overheating. At home, you can put a toy hamster in its housing or another small animal in its habitat, if you have one.
To prevent stress on your pet during the flight, you can give it a special relaxation training. You can do this by giving it toys to play with and places to socialize. It is also helpful to have a schedule for training and flight preparations.
After the flight, the hamster must be warmed up and played with so that it is comfortable before taking it out for some walks or playtime.
Don’t let them eat immediately before travel
Before you take your hamster on an airplane, make sure she is comfortably housed. This includes being able to groom her, place her in a place to sleep, and be able to access her.
If you do not have a place for her to sleep or you do but she doesn’t like it, try keeping her in a cardboard box with some towels on top until you find a comfortable place for her. It will take some time and effort, but keep hoping!
Then, try keeping her in a small cage or don’t even use one at all and just remember where she is. If someone finds her before you do, that would be more than enough reason to not let anyone take care of her. She would most likely die from neglect.
Taking your hamster anywhere is also very important when she needs to go vamoose.
