DIY Hamster Toys

If you are a hamster fan, then you might want to look into creating your own toys. There are many ways to make toys, and they are all beautiful!

Many manufacturers use an alphabet base as the starting point for designing toys. The user fills in the letters with various materials and/or products to create the toy of their dreams.

The best part about this method is that there is no limit to the size of the toy you can make.

Paper tube tunnels

DIY Hamster Toys

These are a pretty new toy trend. They are made of paper or fabric tubes that are cut into different sizes and put inside a hamster or other rodent.

The idea is for the hamster or other rodent to navigate his or her way out of the tube and for it to look like a natural environment, like a pipe.

By exploring his surroundings in this way, he/she can learn about the world around him/her and how to do so.

The best part is that these toys do not require any special tools nor complicated instructions! You just need to provide your creature with some elbow grease and some creativity.

We recommend the Funshine Pet Play Pipes & Play Tunnels, which comes with detailed instructions and two different models: the small and large size pipe tunnels.

Peanut butter ball

A hamster fancy-food treat is a nice, soft buttery ball filled with something interesting. These are a great way to introduce your hamster to new foods and textures.

Wooden block puzzle

DIY Hamster Toys

A new toy idea is the wooden block puzzle. This toy is very similar to a jigsaw puzzle. You mix up the pieces and put them together in a certain order to create a maze or pattern.

The key difference between the puzzle and the jigsaw puzzle is that in the puzzle, you do not rotate the pieces to fit. They must be put together in the correct order!

This toy can be played with by your hamster’s age range. The simplest version looks like stacked wood blocks arranged in a maze pattern. Your hamster has to figure out which ones need to be rotated before adding them onto the next one!

Another variation uses rhombus shaped pieces instead of wood blocks. These must be bought from an enameled hamster food so your hamster does not eat through them.

Seed cake

DIY Hamster Toys

A new toy trend is seed cake. This toy makes your hamster race to eat the most seeds. Hamsters are known for trying to get as many seeds as possible, so this toy is challenging for them.

How to Make a Seed Cake Hamster Toy

Make your seed cake using cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, and carrots. Add powdered milk and bread to create the liquid needed to mixed with the other ingredients. Create small crumbs to mix with the liquid and insert into the hamster’s crack.

Add grass clippings or other non-seed material to create your Hamster Plaything #2.

Plastic bottle tunnels

DIY Hamster Toys

When the plastic bottle rings are your hamster’s new home he or she will make his way to the water dish, he or she will climb up the tunnel and drink!

Creating a water dish is not too difficult, you can find some at pet stores or online. A good one is made of hard plastic and can be painted with your hamster’s favorite food and/or decorations.

The tunnel must be large enough for your hamster to enter and consume its daily dose of water. A small, tight tunnel will cause frustration and possibly escape.

To create the top of the wall in the water dish, get a piece of cardboard or something thick enough to place on top of your sink. Paint it with non-water material such as stone if you have that option.

Plastic bottle rolls

DIY Hamster Toys

What if you wanted to design your own hamster toy? You could start with a bottle roll. A bottle roll is a long, rectangular shape that can be printed out and then cut out to make the shape you want.

Then, you could design and print out some of the other shapes yourself! There are many fun ones to choose from.

These toys are very popular because they can be made in so many ways. Some people use them as playthings, others use them for enrichment activities, and still others use them as diaiodic devices.

Either way, this kind of toy will keep your hamster busy for a little bit!

Hamsters do not do well in temperatures below 32°F or above 104°F. If your hamster is warm enough outside, you may just want to put down a blanket or two to prevent overheating.

If you want to add some safety measures, add a top layer of insulation by covering the container with something warm such as a pillow or folded over blanket.

Cotton ball tunnel

DIY Hamster Toys

A hamster’s favorite thing to do is to forage. So, if you have a hampster that loves to forage, then this toy is for you.

A cotton ball tunnel is easy to create. Just place a cotton ball in the center of a piece of paper and give it a couple of days to set up. Once it does, enjoy!

You can make your hamster toys with lots of sizes of cotton balls and just toss them in the wash and they are fresh every time. You can also buy these made by companies such as Sextoys®.

Another great way to create a tunnel is using some colorful boxing tape. Just make sure it is non-stick so your hamster does not get stuck.

Wood chews

DIY Hamster Toys

A few different types of wood chips and the best places to buy them. Both can be purchased at most pet stores, but depending on where you live, they may or may not have these items.

If you have a hamster that is into things like chasing waterfalls or is known for chewing things like paper towels, then looking into one of the wood chip varieties that is liked by hamsters is a great idea. These are inexpensive and can easily be bought in bulk at online sellers as well as store-fronts.

Another tip for finding wood chip beds for your hamster is to look between the floorboards and find some kind of cover.
