Having a hamster is great! He or she can do all the same things a hamster can! But what if you had another rodent in your home? A mice, polecat, or even a badger?
Rabbits are very social animals and enjoy sharing their cage space with other hamsters. So, if you have a more social hamster, he or she would probably like to live in a Rodent Compassionate Living Facility (RCLF).
If you have a more solitary hamster, he or she could benefit from being part of an Exclusion Diet. These diets prevent other rodents from eating your pet because they are not hungry enough to drink enough water and missing them due to wetting.
Normally, when food is available, hamsters will come look for it. However, if there is no food available, they will stop appearing as much. This causes problems such as not getting attention and/or housing and/or maintenance.
Products with low scents
If you are worried about your hamster being overwhelmed by a clean environment, then you should look for hamster-safe cleaning products that have very little scent. Most hamsters prefer a clean environment, so if you find ones that did not enjoy a lot of scent or dust, then you could limit the number of products that contain ingredients that cause dust or smell.
Many animals do better in a clean environment because they do not know what exists elsewhere in their habitat. A habitat filled with lots of smells and noise is something an animal spends a lot of time getting accustomed to.
A simple way to test if an animal might benefit from less scented or strong cleaning products is to put some in their cage with some plain water and see if the hamster clambers out of the water to get it away from the smell. If so, then it seems safe to limit the amount of scented products they are exposed to.
Natural scents
If you are sensitive to smells, you can still use some safe cleaning products. Many are marked “unsmelly,” but some are not guaranteed. Some are even labeled “dog-safe”!
Some companies add ingredients such as eucalyptus or grapefruit juice in the scent to make them less offensive to those with asthma or allergies. You can still use them if you feel comfortable with doing so.
These neutral-smelling cleaners can be beautiful to look at and use. They may even help draw your hamster back into the room for affectionate behavior. They may also reduce hamster bed bugs and stomach ache because they do not contain drugs or anything else that causes side effects.
They are also helpful with getting rid of dust mites and other weak animals.
Citrus cleaners
Most household cleaners contain toxic ingredients such as alcohol, chemicals, and organic compounds. These ingredients can no longer be found in most places, so today’s experts have to find new ways of cleaning.
Some of these new cleaning products are formulated using natural ingredients like citrus cleaners and essential oils. Many of them are safe to use on surfaces and in large quantities can be harmful. Still, these kinds of products are becoming more popular as people learn about their benefits.
How You Use It
When cleaning with a citrus-based cleaner, make sure you brush your hamster thoroughly to prevent it from getting cleaned up by the cleaner. Some cleaners even require you to use a brush designed for pets!
You can also put some olive oil or coconut oil on your hands and feet to prevent your hamster from getting oil on her skin.
Bleach
Although it may seem counterintuitive, Bleach can actually help keep your hamster safe. When hamsters are exposed to bleach, they eliminate some of the cleaning products from their cage through their poo.
This process is called toilet-ing or wipe-ting with a poo. When cleaning with bleach, be sure to never directly touch the liquid itself as that could potentially cause an agonizingly painful burns.
Rather, you should use a non-toxic cleanser or liquid that has been diluted with water to wipe away the container and its contents.
The point is to prevent your hamster from getting any bleach on his fur while cleaning!
Hamster Friendly Deodorant is a great way to protect your pet from the smell of disinfectant or polish removers.
Vinegar
Contrary to what many people believe, the common belief that mixing vinegar and water will clean your hamster is completely false. In reality, this method can cause serious health issues for your hamster.
While both water and vinegar contain compounds that can act as cleaning agents, they are not safe for your hamster. The key in safely administering a cleaning product is to use only the recommended amount of the product per day.
Too much will not work and you will have to constantly buy new products because your hamster will have no control over its food or liquid intake due to the smell of the new product.
Water
Even though water is very Safe to drink, it does not mean that all water products are hamster-safe. Some companies add substances like fluoride or trace minerals that may in fact be harmful!
Many brands of water products include a “watered down” version called “purified” water. This type of water has been watered down and sometimes includes chemicals to make it more effective.
These purifying agents can include sodium bicarbonate, Potassium Chloride, and/or EDTA. Each of these may be harmful to your hamster!
Potassium Chloride is a common compound found in many recipes for cooking. It can also be found in some medicines and supplements to increase hardness orolitanability.
Bicarbonate can be used as a substitute for baking soda, which contains Sodium. Baking soda can contain too much of the unnamed chemical that decreases the pH of foods, making them hard or even dangerous for your hamster.
Salt
Salt is one of the most recognized and most debated cleaning products lines. MostSalt salespeople will tell you that it does not work and that you must use either soap or distilled water for it to work.
This is true! Both soap and salt can be cumbersome to use. However, if your hamster does get dirty a lot, then this may be the right cleaning product for you.
Salt contains all of its molecules arranged in a way that cannot be removed by most substances. Unlike other cleaning products, which may contain detergents or Agents, Salt does not contain anything else. It is just the applied force from removing the dirt from a surface.
The main problem with salt is that your hamster might get too much! This can lead to medical problems such as dehydration or Forumosis, a type of arthritis that affects his legs in particular.
Sugar
There’s a reason most commercial hamsters don’t have sugar in their diets. It’s linked to hamster corvus heart disease.
Sugar is a highly concentrated food, and it can make your hamster eat too fast and too often.
If you want to give your hamster a healthy diet, look for foods that are low in fructose and high in protein. Peanut butter is an excellent protein source, as is textured vegetable protein (TVP).
You can also pick up flavors such as vanilla or apple, so your hamster does not have to eat the same thing every day. By switching him out with different foods and flavors, you are helping slow his obesity growth.
