A few years ago, a baby hamster was born with a rare and advanced congenital heart condition. The condition prevented the baby hamster from developing properly and maintaining a heartbeat.
The condition was called transposition of the great arteries (or vessels). It is typically diagnosed at birth, when the hamster is unable to take a breath without assistance.
Despite this, doctors were able to determine where the little hamster’s heart should be by location. This made them hopeful that they could find a way to bring the little hamster back to health.
However, attempts at re-supply surgery failed and the little guy was forced to die in his cage on December 31, 2017 – two months after his birth. He did not starve to death, just due to the condition.
This article will discuss how Hamsters feed their babies.
Feed soft food
Most small mammals, including hamsters, are born naked and feed mainly on breast milk or formula for a few weeks. This is important to know, because the hamster’s stomach is not able to handle solid foods at this stage.
The hamster has a special pouch on its chest that feeds its baby. When the baby is ready to be independent, it leaves the feeding process and goes to the mother for continued care.
During this time, the baby stays close to its mommy by burping and rolling in her milk. After another few weeks, it goes outside to play!
Because of this time of need, most mothers will give their babies at least a little loveyHug before they go away for the night.
Hold their baby and feed them
While hamsters are typically a slow, methodical breed, they can feed themselves. This is possible if they are given the opportunity to do so.
If you keep your hamster in a hamster house, you can provide it with plenty of room to exercise and develop. It has the ability to climb, twist, and turn without any difficulty.
Additionally, you can give it access to water and food. You can even buy special diet sets that it gets fed from or contaminated with!
This is why keeping a hamster is such a great way to learn about patience and development.
Let their baby eat off their hand
Some parents leave a baby alone in a hamster cage for short periods of time. While this sounds terrifying, it may allow the baby to develop its own instincts.
If you are leaving your baby alone for a short period of time, you can let them develop their babies by letting them eat off your hand and/or by letting them co-habit with an adult.
This is called hand-feeding or bottle-feeding. The adult feeds the baby directly from the bottle or re-uses your hand to hold the baby.
Directly following birth, infants commonly climb onto their parents and siblings to obtain some nutrition. If you are willing to keep these babies isolated for this reason, it may help development.
As they grow and learn, they transfer that information to the container where they were born.
Offer bottles
Having a baby is supposed to be fun, right? You get to hold and care for your baby for the first time, you learn some new things about them, and you make their first day to day activities interesting.
On the other hand, there are times when babies need help getting accustomed to the world and learning what foods look like.
This can be tough if your baby does not nurse or drink enough to keep their appetite up.
Some babies may not start eating or eliminating until after they receive several feeds. Luckily, hamsters can receive their babies at any time too!
If you have a little hamster who needs a feed, here are some tips on how to help them get ready for life as a baby hamster.
Provide hamster milk replacement
Some baby hamsters will visit the milk replacement formula pouches in the hamster’s cage. If you have a hamster of your own, you can try putting some new milk replacement pouches in its cage to give it access to them.
Theoretically, this helps it find and enjoy its food! By placing some milk replacement pouches in its cage, you are helping its health and happiness.
However, not all baby hamsters like their food or like changing its food. If your hamster does not eat very often, if it was sick recently or if it was overfeeders (feeding itself too much), then you may want to buy a small amount of food and give it as an emergency feeding.
Keep the heat on high
When the baby is born, the hamster needs to keep its baby warm. This can be done by using a warmer spot or by putting a blanket with them.
To keep the baby warm, you must provide it with heat. The hamster will try to hold and rub its baby as soon as it sees it.
The best way to provide this is with a wrap. You can buy one at your local pet store, or you can make your own at home!
To keep the wrap warm, you must wrap it tight. If you have less material to work with, then use only one hand to hold onto the wrap and cover the baby. With two hands, there is more room for heat retention!
Once the baby is covered, put some newspaper under them to cushion the floor.
Limit exercise before feeding time
Most dogs that exercise often are advised to limit their exercise to a walk every other day or a game play session on a few occasions. This is due to the prevalence of obesity in dog breeds.
Excess weight can lead to structural problems such as type II diabetes, heart disease, and arthritis. How often you exercise your dog also depends on what they want out of an exercise program.
A game play session or walks can be very satisfying and provide some calories into your dog. However, these are not very effective in educating your dog about exercising. A walk may only be achieved with sit or downs in order to get onto a stand or for getting out of bed in the morning!
A two-hour workout is considered Exercise 3 (walk plus sit or down), Exercise 2 (walk plus jump), and no work at all (no walk, no sit, no jump).
