They typically consume vegetation and/or non-food items such as insects or plant matter. Because hamsters do not use their poop as a source of nutrition, most don’t even notice if it is missing. Your hamster may even eat it!

Hamsters are not getting enough fiber due to their diet. Most commercial hamster diets contain nearly no vegetables and only one type of food: drywall screws or foam squares! Because hamsters do not eat their own weight in weight of food, they are still lacking in the amount of fiber in their diet.

While most people think hamsters like to eat paper or plastic, it is actually their desire to smell their surroundings that makes them prefer a certain type of diet.
