Hamsters are small, usually brown, rats. They are nicknamed hamster because of their long, thin body shape. Hamsters typically live between one and five years, making them a long-term Rat.
Re-homing hamsters is not for the inexperienced rat. Creating a hamster ward or home is the best way to re-home your hamster. This is due to the fact that they are vulnerable and need to be protected from outside threats, such as dogs.
The most common way to give a hamster a new home is by purchasing one in the pet shop and taking it to their new owners at the vets’ office. Or you can take them yourself to your local vet’s office and ask for his or her opinion.
Call your vet
If your hamster has any kind of metabolic disease, like diabetes, heart or lung disease, or if it has a formatting problem (too short or too long in the hamster wheel), your vet can prescribe medication to help restore proper health.
Unfortunately, there is no fool-proof way to bring a sick hamster into a veterinary clinic for treatment. That’s why it’s important to get your Hammy home and on his/her favorite wheel as soon as possible!
If you have another size hamster or a smaller animal, you can try trying what is called an “indoor” habitat. These are typically made out of concrete or sometimes grass with some features in between. You can put it just outside the door of wherever you keep your home so that your owner brings it inside if the weather gets cold.
Either way, get your Hamster into the hands of a qualified veterinarian as quickly as possible to determine if and what kind of treatment is needed.
Check its breathing
If your hamster is not breathing, it may be too cold or that it is not eating enough. Check its temp by putting a small amount of water in its mouth and then taking a step away to see if he drinks enough.
If the hamster is not eating enough, it may be suffering from malnutrition. Any pet should be fed and housed properly to stay healthy. If you think that your hamster is not eating enough, you can give it some fruits and vegetables.
Determine whether the hamster has diarrhea or constipation by giving it some fresh food or water. If the hamster has diarrhea or constipation, you can use a little water bottle filled with warm water to give to it.
If these problems are solved, try bringing in a new hamster together with your other pet so that they can get used to each other. A new hamster will most likely enjoy living inside a large cage as much as getting acquainted with other animals.
Check its pulse
If your hamster has stopped eating or appears to be eating too slowly, check its pulse. This means getting down on all fours and checking to see if the hamster is breathing.
If the hamster is breathing, go back up on your knees and again check its pulse. If it is still alive, start giving it food again. If it is dead, you can put it in a bag and take it to the vet!
Mixing food with water is a good way to feed your hamster. Make sure you do not increase the water intake by excessive amounts of material – you want enough food for one hamster only!
Re-homing an escaped hamster may be hard, as there may be legal obligations to keep them in captivity.
Try rubbing it to get it to wake up
If you’re trying to help your hamster get back to sleep, then you should probably try something different. A hamster will usually go back to sleep within a few hours of being let sleep.
So, if you are trying to get it back asleep for the day, make sure you remember how to let it sleep. Once it’s asleep, that’s what matters!
The best way to try and revive a hamster is by rubbing it against your leg or other body. This will help bring some blood and feel back into its system. Hopefully this will help bring it back to sleep!
If you do have trouble with the leg rubbing method, then try putting your hamster in a hammock or cage so that they can be as cozy as possible.
Give it some water or fruit juice
Like most mammals, hamsters are thirsty. If you have a hamster, give it some water or fruit juice to drink regularly.
If you have a cage hamster, you can easily give him or her a water bottle every hour to keep him or her hydrated. You can even buy a hamster bowl and put it in front of your animal to help keep its water intake up.
If you have a ball hamster, try giving it an apple as bait for the next excursion. Or if you have more social hamsters that like to escape, try putting some plastic wrap over the top of their cage to create an escape proof space.
Keep checking its pulse and breathing until you get to the vet
If your hamster is sick, you should call the vet right away. Even if the hamster is not breathing, the vet can check its pulse and breathing to see if it is okay.
If the hamster is not breathing, the vet can help by giving it a respiratory stimulator to breathe for it. The stimulator can be placed inside its tummy or on its chest.
Then the vet can check its heart rate and blood work to see if anything seems wrong.
Generally, hamsters are healthy animals that get sent to a veterinarian for medical treatment. However, sometimes something goes wrong and they have to be brought in.
If your hamster has trouble keeping its head up, you can send it out of its cage with a few minutes time and effort. This will let it relax enough to keep going and get help.
Wrap it in a warm towel
Once your hamster is comatose, it is time to wrap it in a warm towel. This may seem strange at first, but once you do it, you will never forget!
This reduces stress on the hamster and helps absorb heat. After you put the hamster in a warm place, make sure it is still protected with aIterally, protect the hamster with a blanket or heavy towel until she is back on her feet.
To prevent her from overheating, cover her with a warming blanket. If she had been cold before, add some warm clothes to reduce chillness.
Protect her from predators by having plenty of blankets around to protect her from the wind and rain. Make sure she has enough space to escape if needed.
Hug it or hold it to keep it warm
If you find your hamster is freezing or is already frozen, then the first step is to give it a warm, comfortable place to be.
Keeping your hamster in direct sun or in a warm, insulated cage is the best way to accommodate this. If you have another pet that gets warm quickly, you can also put your hamster in that pet’s cage as well.
The second step is to pay attention to how hot its temperature setting is. If it seems too hot for your hamster, try moving up the wattage of the heater or adding more insulation around it.
